The Sydney Hunt follows the old English pastime of mounted fox hunting albeit with an Australian flavour. This traditional way of hunting is also known as Riding to Hounds and we emphasis that at no stage are firearms used or tolerated. Our pack of hounds has an ancestry that can be traced back many generations and like most working hounds are bred for their distinct qualities and characteristics.
The Sydney Hunt Club normally hunts in an area between Sydney and Goulburn and on occassion further afield. We hunt on Sundays and selected Wednesdays from May to the October long weekend where we hold our last meet for the current season, traditionally at 2 historic properties at Mudgee.
We hunt at the invitation of selected property owners and treat those properties with care and due diligence. Non riders are always welcome and in some instances are able to follow the hunts, at a discreet distance, depending on availability of 4WD. Whilst a hunting calendar is available at the beginning of the season properties and hunt frequency may change depending on weather and stock conditions.
Proper and suitable etiquette is observed for the enjoyment of all, the experience of hunting and safety requirements. The Sydney Hunt is a member of the Equestrian Federation of Australia (EFA) and therefore certain protocols are observed.
During the off season and when not hunting the club conducts a number of social activities both involving horses and not, which allows for member’s families and non-riders to enjoy the camaraderie that this club offers. Visitors from both interstate and overseas are always welcomed as are junior riders. Those new to hunting are always encouraged.
